Jealous Nostril understand that, at its best, a band can be a vehicle for transcendence; that when you strip away all the bullshit – the stats and the streams, the campaign strategies and the column inches – what you’re left with can be the purest kind of pleasure available.
They know this because Jealous Nostril’s core duo – Johnny Borrell and Jack Flanagan – have both experienced this alchemy before: the former as lead singer of generation-defining indie band Razorlight, the latter as the sparky young bassist who helped propel Mystery Jets to a second wind of acclaim. But even without a shred of knowledge of their previous musical endeavours, the pair’s sheer enthusiasm for their new project is testament enough to the fact they know they’re onto something good.
“Sometimes bands feel like they’ve got a bit of a magic to them, and when you feel that you’ve just got to keep it together at all costs,” Borrell begins. “In my career, I’ve had magical line ups of bands that we haven’t managed to keep together and that’s really hurt me because it’s like, fuck, what a waste. That unique thing that only you as a group can create – it shouldn’t be complicated. It’s just about what’s in your heart and how you hit the notes. And once you’re in it, you don’t give a shit about what anyone else thinks; about what you’ve done before or what you’re about to do. You couldn’t give a fuck because you’re in this thing that feels better than anything.”
