The Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang are an American hip-hop group formed in Englewood, New Jersey, in 1979. They are widely credited with bringing hip-hop into the mainstream with their groundbreaking single “Rapper’s Delight” (1979), one of the first rap songs to achieve commercial success. The group originally consisted of Michael “Wonder Mike” Wright, Henry “Big Bank Hank” Jackson, and Guy “Master Gee” O’Brien. Their music fused catchy disco rhythms with playful, rhythmic rapping, helping define early hip-hop’s style and appeal. While their later releases never matched the impact of “Rapper’s Delight,” The Sugarhill Gang remain iconic pioneers in hip-hop history.
